Equine Ambulatory Emergency Service

Overview

The NC State Veterinary Hospital Equine Service has joined with three area equine practice owners to develop an after-hours Equine Ambulatory Emergency Service to our referring veterinarians and their clients. This model is a novel program initiated by NC State, with goals of improving the work-life balance of participating primary care clinicians, improving first opinion emergency case education for NC State students, and maintaining continuity of care as caseloads continue to increase substantially.

Currently, three clinics are partnering with NC State as subscribers to the service: Neuse River Equine Hospital, Performance Equine Mobile Veterinary Services and 3H Equine Hospital. Active clients of the participating practices are eligible for the new after-hours emergency service.

The Equine Ambulatory Emergency Service operates from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and on the weekends from 5 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Monday.

The service treats emergencies on farms within a 40-mile radius of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. For emergencies outside the 40-mile radius, horses can be hauled to one of the participating clinics, where NC State clinicians will see the patients. If the horse cannot be trailered, then the subscribing practice will work with NC State clinicians to facilitate an exam on the farm. Cases requiring more intensive medical or surgical treatment would be offered referral to NC State or to other regional referral hospitals.

We intend to expand the subscriber base within the first two years to include all area practices and solo practitioners who want to subscribe as we continue to support our equine veterinary community.
