Clinical Activities and Procedures
The NC State Farm Animal Veterinary Service offers a wide range of medical and surgical procedures for your animal.
Medical Services
Our internal medicine specialists diagnose and treat farm animals with medical problems including neurologic, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, cardiac, infectious, hematologic and oncologic disorders.
Advanced diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound, endoscopy, radiography, CT and MRI enable us to accurately determine the cause of your animal’s problem. If your animal requires hospitalization, it will be intensively monitored and cared for by the 24-hour patient care staff. This allows for immediate adjustments in therapy to be made for critical cases. Our facilities include a hydraulic tilt chute for cattle, allowing for thorough workups of lame bulls and cows.
In addition to individual animals, examination of animals representing a herd problem can often yield valuable information when given a thorough diagnostic workup, leading to a solution for the herd. For example, we are able to perform advanced respiratory disease diagnostics, including evaluation of the upper airways with a camera (endoscope), sampling and cytologic evaluation of airway fluid, identification of pathogen(s) causing respiratory disease, and targeted antimicrobial susceptibility testing to find the most effective antimicrobial drug for bacterial infections.
The Farm Animal Veterinary team also performs routine procedures such as vaccinations, disbuddings, foot trims, breeding soundness exams, and pregnancy examination.
Surgery Services
The NC State Farm Animal team has expertise in:
- Gastro-intestinal surgeries: correction of displaced abomasum or intestinal obstruction, rumenotomy
- Urinary tract surgeries: tube cystostomy or bladder marsupialization
- Reproductive surgeries: caesarean section, castration, spay, mastectomy, prolapse repair
- Dehorning
- Tumor removal
- Fracture repairs
For complex surgical cases, the expertise of NC State’s board-certified surgeons is utilized. When anesthetizing an animal is necessary, the NC State Veterinary Hospital has a team of board-certified anesthesiologists to provide state-of-the-art anesthesia and multi-modal pain control.
